I was at this press conference, and it was the first time I felt divisiveness amongst raza leaders. Sisters and Brothers : The Press Conference, I organized Thursday, May 17,2007, which included the National LULAC President, Rosa Rosales, Jay Johnson Castro and my organizations, The Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice and the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement-AFL-CIO was a successful event covered by the Spanish and English media.
Our message was clear that we are in "solidarity" in our mission to work in "unity" to continue to work to close these prisons for profit in Texas and Don Hutto Prison Camp which are beign used to incarcerate immigrant families and children! I strongly believe that we must work with all our coalitions, Amnesty International, Children and Families for Human Treatment Alliance, NAACP, Labor and other groups who want to join this just cause.
I worked along side Cesar E. Chavez half of my life and what I learned from him is to continue to "strike" where it hurts and that is the pocket book. I will be talking to Congressman Ciro Rodriguez, who sits on the powerful Appropriations Committee, to start an investigation on why are these prisons for profit did not allow UN Representatives and organizations to come into these facilities, what are they hiding?
Not one cent should be appropriated any more! As the Founder of the Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice and Organizational committees in San Antonio, Texas, along side founding member organization LULAC, (Rosa Rosales, LULAC National President), and the National Labor contacts, we will continue to work to close these prisons for profit. I can assure you that !
Our target date to converge on Taylor, Texas is Saturday, June 23 - International Refugee Day. Our message was heard loud and clear in the news press conference as we announced the Freedom Bus riders /caravan campaign - "Free The Children"

Jay, I am pleased that Amnesty International will participate in the upcoming action at Hutto Prison. This will still require a major effort of getting the people out there. Amnesty Int. is mainly a watchdog org. and will send out a contingency to observe that we don't overstep our rights and that those we are protesting against don't violate our rights. Defending the rights of the asylum seeking refugees , will still depend on our efforts. I will work towards the date of June 23rd., but not only towards that date . As you well know it will take more than just one demonstration . We have been organizing a day of Action for June 9th 2007 from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Hutto Prison in Taylor TX. Hope you can join us. I will keep organizing people that wish to do something to close Don T. Hutto prison down as well as

There is also a coalition in Dallas of different groups such as NAACP and CAIR that might join forces. This is suddenly taking on the national scope that we hoped for.
