> During my initial process of becoming a mechista in Tejaztlan, we had to attend a M.E.Ch.A. Regional Conference at UT-Austin. Then we marched to the Tejas state capitol, heard many issues, and keynote speakers during Dia de La Raza March in October 1997. I heard a speech by Judge Albert Pena into why he is a Chicano and not Mexican-American while bringing to the attention of Marines killing an innocent boy along our border. The militarization of USA/Mexico border was a reality and Americans are being killed during night operations; however, one boy got the national attention of the media. Today, we face the same process all over again and strong Military support by Governor Rick Perry and Congressman Ciro Rodriguez with his support of the SAVE Act. The drug cartels have become the scapegoat to enforce martial law along the border and creation of a fence that stretches 700 miles long. Immigrants are being profitted by our own Raza and smuggling them into the USA has cost the lives of many like in Victoria, TX. Since 2006, the spark of the immigrant rights movement, nobody has reserved any permits to march in public and the people showed up in high numbers for May 1st. Even though the people marched like cattle, the issues have been ignored by Raza leaders. One important issue is to sink the SAVE Act that would create more detention centers for immigrants. Children are still being detained at the T. Don Hutto Residential Center in Taylor, TX. For more info on liberating the children, please go to http://www.tdonhutto.blogspot.com Make May 1st 2009 a very well known day in Tejaztlan even if it is your last day as a mechista during finals. Free the Children! Stop the Militarization of the Border! No al Muro! End Border Violence! Legalize Drugs!
